The black book series: The best brunch in Athens

Let's start by saying one thing: Brunching has become a thing in Athens over the past few years. Athenians found a new excuse to get out of their houses every Sunday and head to hip restaurants and all-day cafes, to feast on some of the brunching classics, like a good Benedict, or identify the ones that serve dishes with a Greek take on brunching.

As I fall into the category of those who brunch is their favorite linguistic portmanteau, I had to share a renowned list with all the right addresses any self-respected brunch lover who visits Athens, needs to know. This could also be my whole to-do list for November!

1) NEW TASTE

Restaurant ( New Hotel, 16 Fillelinon Str., tel. 210 327 3000, www.yeshotels.gr/hotel/new-hotel, Athens)

Why go there: Because they make a mean egg benedict served in the artful, sophisticated surroundings of New Hotel. Splurging a little on this will be definitely worth it!

Metro Station: Syntagma

2) ODORI VERMUTERIA DI ATENE

All day cafe & Bar ( 2 Skouleniou Str., tel 21 0331 4674, Athens)

Why go there: Because they take comfort food on another level. Fairly priced brunch menu and don't skip the one with the cocktails. It's a faux pas when in Odori.

Metro Station: Panepistimio

3) MALCONI'S

Restaurant ( 43 Patriarhou Ioakim & 23 Ploutarchou Str., tel 21 0724 8920, www.malconis.gr, Kolonaki)

Why go there: This one's a classic. A very stylish hangout with relaxed vibe coupled with egg and pizza know-how. Not exactly a cheap eat but you will definitely won't go broke over a bagel.

Metro Station: Evangelismos

4) 7 CACTUS

All day cafe ( 7 Dimitrakopoulou Str., tel. 213 0452865, Koukaki)

Why go there: Because it serves Greek style brunch but it's such a newbie even Athenians don't know about it yet! It might all sound Greek to you but learning to spell "lalaggia" will be all fun and carbohydrates!

Metro Station: Acropoli

5) ESTRELLA

All day cafe ( 24A Romvis Str., tel. 21 0321 8000, Athens)

Why go there: Originating from Thessaloniki, Estrella is famous for the bougatsan (the greek version of a cronut) a hybrid dish between croissant and bougatsa. Cream filling involved. Great value for money. Hashtag #omg

Metro Station: Monastiraki

6) THE MARGI

Restaurant ( The Margi Hotel, 11 Litous Str., tel. 210 892 9000, www.themargi.gr, Vouliagmeni)

Why go there: All fresh everything, eggs straight from the Margi Farm and this exquisite hotel as the backdrop of your meal. Who could possibly need more on a lazy Sunday?

Metro Station: Since there is no metro in Vouliagmeni it is better to reach Glyfada via tram and take a taxi. Unless you already stay there, then just get dressed and head downstairs!

7) MONSIEUR BARBU

All day cafe ( 49 Markou Mpotsari Str., tel. 21 0924 7555, Koukaki)

Why go there: For the amazing desserts that will follow your equally amazing brunch. Wallet-friendly prices and great urban crowd.

Metro Station: Syngrou-Fix

8) DIFFERENT BEAST

All day cafe ( 19 Kassaveti Str., 21 6700 4556, Kifisia)

Why go there: Different beast looks as it if it's straight out of a Kinfolk editorial, serves mouth-watering cakes, filling dishes and delicious healthy beverages.

Metro Station: Kifisia

9) 42 BARSTRONOMY ATHENS

All day cafe & Bar ( 3 Kolokotroni Str., tel. +30 698 750 9709, Athens)

Why go there: While it would definitely make the top spots in a "Best Bars in Athens" list, this one serves amazing brunch, killer pancakes and who said that brunching is all about the Mimosas and the Bloody Mary's? Have a looks-y at the cocktail menu, you won't regret it.

Metro Station: Syntagma

10) TAKIS BAKERY feat. DRUPES AND DRIPS

Bakery & Cafe/Spritzeria ( 14 Misaraliotou Str., tel. 21 0923 0052, Koukaki)

Why go there: No seats or eggs here! Takis is considered the best bakery in Athens and the rumors are true. The bakery classics live up to the legend, all made with artisan fresh bread and the minature Drupes and Drips across the street (20 Zitrou Str.) makes a good cup of coffee. A very very good cup of coffee. Say hi if you see me queuing!

Metro Station: Acropoli
